movie

The drawings in this book reflect on the character of Ria Rago, a Florinese girl who fights against the arranged marriage with a Muslim in the colonial mission film of the same name (by Father Simon Buis, 1930), on her way to ‘freedom’.

Ria’s village life in the Flores of that time shines through the colonial film images.
Ria Rago’s story was rewritten in 1938 in the adat novel ‘Ria Rago’, by the Tilburg priest and Indologist Piet Heerkens (SVD). Heerkens spent a long time on the island of Flores and got to know the population and their language during his mission. In 1948 he wrote the wonderful epic ‘Het Lied van Saka Ladja’.
Danielle is fascinated by these stories and lets them return in her work.
Who was Ria Rago really? She looks like a sister. Who was her God? Is she family?
Was she free? Can she be set free in the drawings?
Danielle tries to get to know Ria Rago and her community through her work.
